Dr. Nicholas Hoppmann is a Clinical Assistant Professor and clinician-educator in the Department of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and completed residency in internal medicine, followed by fellowships in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
In 2022, Dr. Hoppmann returned to Columbia as the first and only transplant hepatologist at the Columbia VA Health Care System, where he leads efforts to advance liver disease care for veterans. Nationally, he contributes to medical education through his service on the Fundamentals of Liver Disease Curriculum Committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the Education Affairs Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).
His research interests include improving quality of life for patients with advanced liver disease. He served as a site principal investigator and core qualitative team member for the PCORI-funded PAL-LIVER study, a multi-center initiative evaluating palliative care interventions delivered by hepatologists. He also received the VA VISN 7 Research Development Award to investigate spleen stiffness in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
Dr. Hoppmann is passionate about enhancing care for patients with liver disease and their caregivers, and he is committed to advancing medical education as a tool for improving clinical outcomes.
