Honors Courses and Registration Information Hub

Honors course registration can sometimes result in questions or concerns as our students navigate the process. Below you'll find information about course availability, overrides, requesting access to Honors courses, registration based on credit hours and more.

Priority Registration

Honors students receive priority registration, and a student's specific registration time is based on earned credit hours, including USC coursework, AP, IB and dual enrollment credits on the official transcript. The more credits a student has, the earlier their registration time will be.

This means that while priority registration provides early access, some classes may still fill quickly.

Course selection depends on the assigned registration time and current availability. Honors students with more earned credits usually register earlier and may have access to a broader range of courses. As a student earns more credits, their registration time will also improve.

Navigating the Honors Registration Process

What to do if an Honors class you want is full
  1. Review the DegreeWorks plan created by your Honors advisor or check your DegreeWorks audit for alternate course options that meet Honors or major requirements.
  2. Explore other Honors course options by filtering for courses that fulfill different Honors or major requirements.
  3. Submit an Honors override request. While an override is not guaranteed, we prioritize students who need a specific course to stay on track for graduation. Be sure to read the override policy carefully before submitting your request.
Finding open seats in Honors courses

You can quickly see available spaces using the advanced search on my.sc.edu

  1. Log into Self-Service Carolina under the student tab of my.sc.edu.
  2. Navigate to Student → Registration → Browse Classes
  3. Select your term and click Advanced Search.
  4. For campus, choose “USC Columbia."
  5. For attribute, select “SC Honors College.”
  6. Hit enter (instead of clicking “search”) to properly filter only Honors sections.
Needing a specific course for graduation

If you need a specific Honors course to stay on track for graduation, the Honors College will work with you to provide course options and if needed, an override. Review the override policy and email us, if you have questions.

Meet with your advisor

If you have questions before advising appointments begin each semester, you can schedule an appointment via EAB Navigate.

Once formal advising is active, email your advisor directly. Be aware that during peak advising times, availability might be limited.

SCHC 499 Registration Instructions

Sections of SCHC 499 are available in my.sc.edu, similar to other courses. Each section of SCHC 499 is capped at an enrollment of 1 student, and we offer more than 450 individual sections of this course each semester. You do not need to look for a section where your thesis director is the instructor; the Honors College will add instructors to sections once students have enrolled. You may need to try multiple sections before successfully adding one to your schedule.

The default number of credit hours for SCHC 499 is set to 1. If you need to enroll in more than one credit hour, you should adjust the number of credit hours after adding the course to your schedule. Here’s a video that will walk you through the process of changing the credit hours.

Additional Registration Questions

One of our goals in the Honors College is to consistently offer new, exciting courses each semester, so there is no guarantee that a course is always going to be offered. However, students can use our course webpage to see courses we have offered in previous semesters, which can help students gain a sense of what courses are typically offered within the Honors College and which semester they may usually be offered.

A registration hold can mean many things. To view a list of different types of holds and avenues for how to resolve them, please visit the Student Advising Resources page.

Your registration time ticket indicates the earliest time that you can register for classes for the upcoming semester. To view a time ticket:

  • Log into at my.sc.edu, then navigate to the Student tab. Click the Student Profile box. Click “Registration Notices” in the upper right corner of the profile. View the time ticket time.
  • You can directly register for classes using my.sc.edu’s registration function, or with the Schedule Planner add-on. Need help? Registration tutorials are available.

Some sections that begin with an alpha character are designated for special populations. You may only register for these sections if you qualify. Visit the registration troubleshooting page for more information.
