Bio

Dr. Sicheng Wang is an assistant professor of geographic information sciences (GISciences) in the Department of Geography at the University of South Carolina. He is the Director of the Center for GIScience and Geospatial Big Data (CeGIS). Dr. Wang joined the department in 2023 after completing a two-year NSF postdoctoral fellowship at Michigan State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Planning and Public Policy from Rutgers University in 2021 and brings cross-disciplinary industry experience in urban planning, design, user experience (UX), transportation planning, and GIS.

He has served as a panel reviewer for NSF and U.S. DOT research proposals, as well as a standing committee member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) AFB80 Geospatial Data Acquisition Technologies Committee. He is currently a board member of both the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Transportation Geography Specialty Group (TGSG) and Palmetto Active Transportation (PAT, formerly the South Carolina State Walkability & Active Transportation Collaborative). He is also an AI-Teaching Fellow and a Propel AI Research Fellow at the University of South Carolina.


Research

Dr. Wang’s research focuses on the interactions among technologies, environments, and human behaviors. Using large-scale emerging spatial data and integrating advanced analytical approaches with traditional qualitative and quantitative methods, his work spans interrelated topics such as urban and rural planning, transportation infrastructure and policy, travel behavior and accessibility, the behavioral impacts of technology, and community resilience. He is currently leading or contributing to multiple federally, state, and foundation-funded projects, with total external funding exceeding $1.5 million.
